Who Needs a Contractor's License in the State of Arizona?

Last updated 3 months ago

Licensing is required for many different skilled tradesmen in the state of Arizona. Many different types of contractors or construction-related workers also require licenses before they can work or start a business. Here’s a short list of some of the most common contractor licenses required in Arizona:

Commercial Contracting

General commercial contractors and small commercial contractors both require a type B license issued by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. These contractors typically work in the construction, alteration, repair, and addition of commercial buildings designed for use by humans, animal, chattels, or vehicles. Additional licensing may be necessary depending on whether you specialize in a specific area, such as swimming pools, plumbing, or roofing.

Residential Contractors

Like commercial contractors, residential contractors must also obtain a type B license. General residential contractors are only licensed to work on the residential structure itself. Different license types are designated for general residential contracting, remodeling contracting, engineering, plumbing, electrical work, swimming pools, awnings and canopies, and other specialized areas.

Landscaping and Irrigation Technicians

Landscapers and irrigation system installers also require specialized licensing. A type C license also allows individuals to work with minimal fencing and carpentry. For retaining walls above three feet or fences above six feet, an additional license is necessary.

Roofers

Roofing specialists must apply for a type C contractor’s license to legally install roofing materials in Arizona. A roofing contractor’s license also permits individuals to work with foam panel roofing, liquid roofing, shingles, and shakes.

Concrete Workers

Work involving the production and placement of concrete also requires a special contractor’s license. A type L license allows individuals to repair, finish, and color concrete, as well as provide sealing services.
